Shipping is a fundamental pillar of the Greek economy, providing thousands of jobs and supporting related sectors such as shipbuilding and logistics. Ship management, port services, and supply chain operations are key activities within the industry. The BSc (Hons) Shipping Management program, offered in collaboration* with the University of Derby (50th, Guardian University Guide 2024), is designed for students who wish to gain comprehensive knowledge of shipping management and the maritime sector. With a strong academic foundation, the program provides an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles and modern trends in shipping while equipping students with the necessary skills and tools for a successful career. Year 1
Introduction to the shipping industry
The module provides students with an understanding of the fundamental principles and practices of the global shipping industry. The module introduces key concepts in maritime markets, routes, shipping operations, international regulations, and managerial aspects. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, and practical exercises, students will gain the foundational knowledge necessary to understand the essential role of shipping in global trade and commerce.
International trade
The module gives students the opportunity to gain a clear understanding of the principles, theories, and practical aspects of international trade. The module explores the economics of international trade, the impact of globalization on trade flows, trade policies, the role of international trade organizations, and the effects of trade on development and economic growth.
Maritime economics
The module focuses on the economic principles and dynamics that drive the global maritime industry, which is integral to international trade. It covers the economic aspects of shipping operations, market structures, freight pricing, the impact of government regulations, and the role of ports and shipping companies in the global maritime industry.
Maritime policy
The module offers an in-depth exploration of maritime policy, emphasizing the political, economic, and environmental factors influencing global shipping and maritime affairs. The module is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the various dimensions of maritime governance, regulation, and policy - making at the national, regional, and international levels. By engaging with current debates and case studies, students will gain the analytical tools required to evaluate maritime policy challenges and contribute to policy development in maritime sectors.
Management of shipping organisations
The module focuses on the principles, strategies, and operational aspects of managing shipping organisations. It explores how shipping companies navigate the complex environment of international trade and examines the operating environment of maritime organisations as well as their attempt to achieve competitive advantage. Using real-world case studies, students will develop the skills to manage shipping businesses efficiently, ensuring competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market.
Shipping operations
The module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the practical aspects of shipping and maritime operations. It focuses on the processes involved in the planning, execution, and management of ship operations, including fleet management, port operations, cargo handling, and safety procedures. This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage the day-to-day operations of shipping companies and understand the complexities of the global shipping industry.
Year 2
Practical Training in Shipping Management
The Shipping Management internship gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-life situations in the shipping industry. Participants gain experience in areas such as ship management, shipping brokerage, shipping insurance and supply chain. Through working with shipping companies and employers in the industry, they develop practical skills and an understanding of the day-to-day operations of the shipping industry, enhancing their career readiness.
The human element in the shipping industry (Optional)
The module explores the vital role of human factors in the maritime industry. While much of shipping relies on technology and logistics, the performance, safety and security, and efficiency of the sector are profoundly impacted by the human element. This module examines crew management, safety, training, and well-being, while also focusing on the psychological, social, and cultural aspects that influence shipping operations. Students will learn how human error, communication, leadership, and organizational culture affect the shipping industry, particularly in terms of safety, performance, and risk management.
Maritime regulations (Optional)
The module focuses on the regulatory frameworks that governs the global shipping industry. It explores international conventions and industry standards that ensure safety, security, environmental protection, and fair competition within maritime operations. The module covers key regulatory bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and examines the role of regulations in preventing marine accidents, protecting the marine environment, and managing international shipping disputes. Through case studies, students will gain an understanding of the legal mechanisms that shape shipping operations globally.
Carriage of goods by sea
The module focuses on the legal, practical, and commercial aspects of transporting goods by sea. It explores the international conventions, contracts, and documentation that regulate the shipment of cargo, as well as the rights and responsibilities of parties involved in maritime cargo transport. The module covers the role of shipping contracts, the responsibilities of carriers and ship-owners, cargo insurance, and liability for loss or damage to goods. By examining real-world case studies and applying legal principles, students will gain an understanding of the complexities of goods transport via sea.
Quantitative skills for shipping
The module provides students with essential research tools used in the maritime industry to analyse, predict, and optimize various shipping operations. It covers the application of quantitative techniques in areas such as shipping economics, fleet management, route optimization, cargo demand forecasting, and risk assessment. By focusing on practical data analysis, students will gain the skills necessary to make data-driven decisions that improve the operational efficiency and profitability of shipping companies.
Maritime law and marine insurance
The module provides students with the required knowledge of the legal framework governing shipping, with a focus on maritime law and marine insurance. The module covers the core legal principles involved in the carriage of goods, liability in maritime accidents, and the role of marine insurance in managing risks in shipping. Students will explore international conventions, case law, and the types of insurance policies relevant to shipping, including cargo insurance, hull insurance, and liability coverage.
Chartering
The module provides students with a detailed understanding of the process, practices, and legal framework involved in chartering vessels for the transportation of goods. It covers the various types of charter parties, their terms and conditions, the role of brokers, the negotiation process, and the key elements in the operational management of a charter. The module also explores the commercial and financial considerations that impact chartering decisions and the relationship between shipowners, charterers, and brokers. Students will also find out the processes of voyage estimation and laytime calculation.
Port Management
The module offers students a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of managing ports, terminals, and related infrastructure. It covers the operational, financial, and strategic considerations in port management, including the role of ports in the global supply chain, terminal operations, port governance, and port security. The module also explores modern challenges such as environmental sustainability, technological advancements, and the evolving regulatory landscape.
Year 3
Shipping Finance
The module focuses on the financial aspects of the shipping industry, including the sources of finance available to shipowners, investors, and operators, as well as the financial tools and strategies used to manage risk and optimize performance. The module covers topics such as capital raising, financial planning, vessels’ valuation and asset management.
Risk management in shipping
The module offers students an understanding of risk management principles, processes, and techniques used in the shipping industry for the avoidance of risk. The module introduces key concepts such as risk identification, risk assessment, risk control, and risk financing, equipping students with the knowledge to manage risks proactively and make informed decisions to safeguard organizational objectives. The module also explores contemporary issues in risk management in the maritime sector, including emerging risks, crisis management, and regulatory frameworks.
Strategic shipping management & marketing
The module offers students an in-depth understanding of the core principles of managing and marketing shipping services in a competitive global environment. It covers the key strategies and tools used by shipping companies to develop and sustain competitive advantage in the shipping industry. Students will explore internal and external environment, market segmentation, targeting and positioning, branding, customer relationship management, digital marketing, and strategic decision-making in the context of shipping.
Supply chain management and logistics
The module provides a critical understanding of the principles, strategies, and practices of supply chain management and logistics. Students will explore the key components of supply chain management, including procurement, inventory management, transportation, warehousing, and distribution. The module also emphasizes the integration of these components across global supply chains and explores the role of logistics in supporting efficient and effective business operations.
(Final Year) Project
(Final Year) Project, students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their studies to complete a comprehensive research project in the field of shipping management. This project offers students an opportunity to conduct independent research, solve real-world problems, and contribute to the body of knowledge in their field of study. Students will need to follow the form of a research paper for the development of their project.

Entry requirements
Greek senior high school certificate (apolytirium) or equivalent and a good level of knowledge of the English language.
The required level of English corresponds to IELTS 6.5 (B2+). If you do not have a language proficiency certificate, you will participate in the College’s English language placement test.
In addition, you will be asked to submit a CV, letters of recommendation from employers or professors and a copy of your criminal record. Finally, you will be invited to an academic interview with the programme leader.
