Course Information
Mediterranean College has over 45 Years of Experience in the delivery of higher education courses in Psychology and Counselling. The MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is offered in partnership with the University of Derby (TOP 25, Guardian University Guide 2025) and prepares students to work effectively as psychologists specializing in CBT. Graduates can work with clinical populations and other professionals, having acquired core theoretical and empirical knowledge, counseling skills and competence in psychotherapeutic techniques and intervention plans.
What you will learn
The MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offers a comprehensive, practice-focused education in evidence-based psychological interventions. The programme introduces students to the foundations of CBT, exploring its historical development, core theoretical models, and mechanisms of change, situating CBT within the broader psychotherapeutic landscape. Students develop expertise in case formulation and measurement-based care, learning to construct individualized treatment plans and integrate routine outcome measurement to guide clinical decision-making and monitor progress.
Practical skills are emphasised throughout, with modules on core CBT competencies, including assessment, engagement, psychoeducation, behavioural activation, exposure, trauma-informed practice, and working with diverse populations. The programme equips students to deliver both low-intensity interventions—guided self-help, digital and group-based approaches, and support for long-term conditions—and high-intensity CBT for depression, anxiety, and OCD, using structured, evidence-based protocols.
Students also gain research and evaluation skills applicable to clinical settings, preparing them to design and undertake a supervised capstone research project or service-based evaluation, demonstrating methodological rigor and relevance to contemporary practice. Overall, the MSc in CBT prepares graduates with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence needed for advanced clinical roles or further research in cognitive behavioural therapy.
Why Choose This Programme
- Full-Spectrum CBT Training: Covers both low- and high-intensity CBT interventions for a wide range of clinical presentations.
- Structured Supervised Clinical Placements: Hands-on experience across multiple semesters ensures graduates are practice ready.
- Specialized Skills Workshops: Targeted workshops enhance expertise in trauma, comorbidity, stepped care, and long-term conditions.
- Research Integration: Includes research methods training and an independent dissertation/project to promote evidence-based practice.
- International Alignment: Curriculum follows BABCP principles and NHS Step 2 guidelines; delivered in English attractive to both domestic and international students, enhancing employability and career progression.
The programme consists of six (6) 20-credit modules, as well as the postgraduate dissertation (60 credits).
We use multiple learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, discussion sessions, case-based teaching, interactive workshops and lab sessions.
Throughout the programme, you will be expected to take an active role and will be encouraged to contribute to the investigation of concepts in written and oral format. This will enable you to further develop your critical and academic thinking, academic writing and argument building, personal development, reflection, communication and investigative skills.
In all modules, you will be directed to supplementary information sources, to complement the taught material and further encourage independent learning.
Module descriptions
Foundations of CBT: History, Models and Mechanisms
This module introduces students to the theoretical foundations of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, including its historical development, key models (e.g., Beck’s cognitive model, behavioural theories), and mechanisms of change. Students will critically examine evidence-based foundations of CBT and its place in the broader psychotherapeutic landscape.
CBT Case Formulation & Measurement-Based Care
This module develops skills in individualised case formulation using cognitive-behavioural frameworks. Students will learn to construct and communicate formulations, link them to treatment plans, and integrate routine outcome measurement to guide clinical decision-making and evaluate progress.
Core CBT Skills, Diversity & Trauma-Informed Practice
This module focuses on core CBT clinical competencies such as assessment, engagement, psychoeducation, behavioural activation, and exposure. It also addresses working with diverse populations and applying trauma-informed principles. Skills are developed through role-plays, case discussions, and simulated scenarios.
Low Intensity CBT: Guided Self-Help, BA, Anxiety Protocols, Digital Interventions & LTCs
This module equips students with the knowledge and skills to deliver low-intensity CBT interventions following NHS Talking Therapies Step 2 guidelines. It includes behavioural activation, guided self-help for common disorders (e.g., panic, GAD, health anxiety), and delivery via digital, group-based, and telephone formats. Special consideration is given to long-term conditions (LTCs) and relapse prevention.
Research Methods for CBT Practice & Evaluation
This module provides students with methodological and practical research skills relevant to clinical settings. Topics include quantitative and qualitative methods, service evaluation, audit, and ethical considerations. The module supports students in developing a research proposal for their Year 3 research project.
High Intensity CBT: Depression, Panic/Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety & OCD (ERP)
Students learn to deliver high-intensity CBT interventions for depression and anxiety disorders, using evidence-based protocols such as Cognitive Therapy for Depression (CT-D), Cognitive Therapy for Social Anxiety (CT-SAD), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD. Case formulation at model-specific levels and application to co-morbidity are also introduced.
Independent Scholarship
This capstone module enables students to carry out an independent empirical research project or service-based evaluation in the field of CBT. Supported by a research supervisor, students will design, implement, analyse, and write up a project that demonstrates critical understanding, methodological competence, and relevance to clinical practice.
