The MSc Strength and Conditioning at the University of Derby has been designed to educate the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals capable of supporting athletes across every stage of performance development. Combining contemporary sport science with applied coaching practice and cutting-edge performance technologies, the programme prepares graduates for leadership roles within one of the fastest-growing areas of the global sport industry.
Developed in accordance with the University of Derby’s applied learning philosophy, the programme combines advanced scientific knowledge with extensive practical experience. Students learn to design, implement and critically evaluate evidence-based strength and conditioning programmes tailored to athletes of different ages, sporting disciplines and performance levels.
Alongside advanced coaching practice, the curriculum places particular emphasis on performance analysis and data-informed decision-making. Students develop expertise in collecting, interpreting and applying performance data through industry-standard technologies, specialist software and contemporary monitoring systems widely used across elite sport.
The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and fully aligned with the professional standards of the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and the International Universities Strength and Conditioning Association (IUSCA). Learning is firmly rooted in applied practice. Through more than 150 hours of experiential learning, laboratory sessions, applied projects and collaboration with athletes, sports teams and industry partners, students develop practical expertise throughout their studies.
A distinctive feature of the programme is the Human Performance Lab, where students gain hands-on experience using professional technologies including Force Plates, Surface Electromyography (EMG), GPS Athlete Monitoring Systems, Linear Position Transducers and specialist performance analysis software used across professional sport.
The programme also explores the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in performance analysis, athlete monitoring and evidence-informed coaching, preparing graduates to work confidently within the rapidly evolving landscape of high-performance sport.

Human Performance Lab
Applied practical training represents a core component of the programme and takes place within the Mediterranean College Human Performance Lab, a specialist facility for education, assessment and research designed to replicate the working environment of elite performance organisations.
Students gain hands-on experience using advanced laboratory equipment and technologies employed by Strength and Conditioning practitioners, sport scientists and performance analysts, including:
- Force Plates for the assessment of strength, power and neuromuscular performance.
- Surface Electromyography (EMG) for the analysis of muscle activation patterns.
- GPS Athlete Monitoring Systems for monitoring training load and competitive performance.
- Linear Position Transducers for measuring movement velocity and power output during resistance training.
- Specialised software for the assessment and analysis of human performance.

Advanced Research Methods
This module develops the research competencies required to undertake scientific investigation within Strength and Conditioning and Exercise Science. Students gain an understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, statistical analysis, research design and ethical considerations, equipping them to critically evaluate the literature and generate evidence-informed scientific knowledge.
Athlete Performance Management in Practice
This module focuses on the practical management of athletic performance within high-performance sporting environments. Students develop the skills required to assess, monitor and optimise athlete performance through the application of contemporary technologies, objective performance metrics and internationally recognised performance analysis methodologies.
Strength and Conditioning Science
This module provides an in-depth exploration of the physiological, biomechanical and training principles underpinning Strength and Conditioning practice. Students examine contemporary scientific approaches to developing strength, power, speed, agility and endurance, while designing evidence-based training programmes tailored to the specific demands of different sports and populations.
Advanced Resistance Training Methodologies
This module examines advanced resistance training methodologies and their application across athletes of varying performance levels. Students explore contemporary training approaches, including Velocity-Based Training (VBT), plyometric training, power development and advanced periodisation strategies designed to optimise athletic performance.
Field-Based Conditioning and Monitoring
This module focuses on the assessment and monitoring of physical performance within applied training environments. Students develop practical competence in the use of athlete monitoring technologies, fatigue assessment methods and performance data interpretation to support effective evidence-based coaching decisions.
Independent Research Project (Dissertation)
The dissertation represents the culmination of the postgraduate learning experience. Students design and conduct an original research project within a specialised area of Strength and Conditioning, integrating theoretical knowledge, applied practice and advanced research methodologies. Through this process, they further develop their critical thinking, research independence and capacity to address complex challenges in sport and exercise science.

Professional Experience Pathway
Applicants who do not meet the standard academic entry requirements may still be considered where they can demonstrate substantial and relevant professional experience.
Suitable applicants will normally have either:
a degree in any discipline together with 12–24 months of supervisory experience within a relevant sport or performance environment;
or
three to five years of managerial or senior professional experience, preferably supported by an appropriate vocational qualification, demonstrating extensive sector knowledge and professional competence.
Applications submitted through the Professional Experience Pathway are considered individually.
As part of the admissions process, applicants will be invited to attend an interview with the Programme Leader in Greece to assess their academic readiness, professional experience and suitability for postgraduate study.
Additional Admissions Information
Applicants applying through the Professional Experience Pathway may also be asked to provide:
a professional reference from their line manager outlining their responsibilities and professional achievements;
a reflective statement demonstrating their readiness for postgraduate study, where appropriate.
Following enrolment, students admitted on the basis of professional experience may be required to attend Academic Skills Workshops delivered by the University of Derby and/or Mediterranean College. These workshops are designed to strengthen postgraduate academic writing, critical thinking, information literacy and academic referencing skills, supporting a successful transition to Master’s-level study.
Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with the University’s entry requirements.
